Painting may be one of the oldest and most familiar forms of art, but Lambeth Open demonstrates just how many different ways artists can approach it. Some work directly from observation. Others build paintings intuitively through colour, texture and gesture. Some combine painting with printmaking, collage or other media.
Printmaking brings another fascinating dimension. The process of carving, layering, inking and printing means that the finished image is inseparable from the techniques used to create it. This year’s Lambeth Open includes artists working across this whole spectrum.
